#Yamasan's Soil

Nikko Sand refers to the hardest type of pumice from the Kanuma soil produced around Kanuma City, and it is mined around Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. It is said to be harder than even the high-grade hard Kanuma soil. It can truly be called the highest grade of Kanuma soil.

While Kanuma soil is readily available at home centers nationwide, this Nikko Sand is rarely found at home centers even within Tochigi Prefecture. It is expensive (about twice the price of hard Kanuma soil, and more than three times the price of general Kanuma soil) and difficult to obtain.

It is sterile, has excellent drainage and aeration, retains moisture, and is very hard, making it resistant to crumbling. It is primarily used in soil mixes for high-grade bonsai, orchids, and wild plants.

Its high drainage and aeration, along with its extreme hardness, make it suitable for soil mixes for succulents such as Haworthia, Agave, and cacti.

When growing succulents, the most common failures are overwatering or using soil with poor drainage and aeration, leading to root rot. To ensure healthy growth, we recommend using soil like this in your mix.
